In this exhibition, Scilla Alvarado uses found objects, slate, rocks, glass, ceramics to express emotions triggered by circumstances and events, enjoying personal memories and adventures and journeys embarked on internally and externally.

Scilla Alvarado is a self-taught, mixed-media mosaicist who has learnt so much from many different mosaic artists. She has lived between London and a Luxor village in Egypt for over 25 years and has led a life immersing herself in different cultures and contexts deepening her understanding and bridging differences. She herself comes from a very mixed spiritual and cultural heritage and having been a psychotherapist, shamanic practitioner and a teacher she is inspired by people’s stories particularly the marginalised and disenfranchised as well as the historical context of the locations she finds herself in. 

Scilla's mixed heritage resulted in her being a bridge at times through experiences of transgenerational trauma where difference had not been accepted and at other times celebrating the richness of difference. In the exhibition her adventuring spirit leads her to draw on many different traditional and cultural art forms and materials found on her journies from nature and everyday life. Some of the exhibits come from a period of creating Islamic patterns inspired from living in Egypt and having loved geometry at school, eventually creating her own style of mosaics from them. Sometimes when she creates she consciously sets out with the intention of telling a story and with at other times she is attracted to materials, colours, shapes etc and a story emerges intuitively in the creating. She has set up a mosaic project in Upper Clapton, London and in Luxor, Egypt where visitors participate in workshops.
