A self-taught artist based in North London, Grant’s work is grounded in observation and accessibility, her teaching practice champions drawing as a tool for all, resisting the idea that creativity belongs only to the trained or the elite. Her art, like her teaching, insists on the beauty and value of being present - to one another, and to the world around us.
“We live our daily lives in a constant exchange with the set of daily appearances surrounding us[… ] What we habitually see confirms us.”
• John Berger, Opening a Gate
In her exhibition GLIMPSES, Grant explores the strange intimacy of public spaces. Inspired by her own awkward (yet rewarding) experience of learning to swim as an adult, many of the works depict and interrogate community swimming pools, where bodies are exposed, movements are clumsy, and yet a shared humanity often emerges.
Alongside these watery scenes are fragments from the city: a stranger’s face glimpsed on the bus, a solitary lunch eaten in the sun, the glimmer of connection between anonymous lives briefly intersecting. Grant’s art invites us to slow down and savour the wonder of simply being alive.
Grant explains that “these are small moments — fleeting, sometimes funny, sometimes aching with meaning. I try to pay attention to them to make them stay, just a little longer.”
