Highgate and Hampstead is new exhibition of paintings and drawings by Martin Evans and Susanna Burton.
Martin is a local artist who walks his dog Raff in Waterlow Park most days. He is interested in the informal views, small intimate areas and incidental moments, all of which make up his relationship with the park.
As an architect, Martin is drawn to structural forms - such as the sculptures, steps, and urns - and views to buildings and monuments outside of the park, into the cemetery and beyond; these are seen in conjunction with the foliage and informality of the park.
His paintings show a snatched glimpse or fleeting moment taken from his daily walk, views changing through the seasons, weather conditions and his mood at the time. It is these smaller and quieter images, rather than the bigger sweeping views, which form memories and the emotional connection to the park. Susanna lives in Hackney and has come to paint and draw on Hampstead Heath for many years. These works are large, often complicated, views done in charcoal on paper, the media a reflection of the organic material Susanna is depicting. All these drawings are of the Heath, and in a similar way to Martin, Susanna draws the ordinary corners deliberately avoiding the big vista and the grand skyline, she chooses spots that are wild and unkempt, with plants thriving or rotting.
The drawings are of confusion in nature, they’re messy and tangled, nothing is clean cut, but if you stand back or look long enough it starts to make sense. To learn more about Susanna, please visit her website or her Instagram.
