A Note From Ian...

"When I was invited by Katherine and the team to play a show at the magnificent Lauderdale House, for this year’s EFG London Jazz Festival, I accepted with joy. With the wonderful Brian Blain on programming duties for many a great season, I always looked forward to doing my thang in that gorgeous room.

The show will be just me at the piano, a format I’ve enjoyed for many years, especially at the smaller venues. Although I love being the jazz singer, working with my ace band, these solo outings allow me to return, in part to my comedy and cabaret years - I worked almost exclusively on the 80s and 90s stand-up circuit, where I met some amazing friends like Julian Clary, Hattie Hayridge, Barb Jungr and Mark Thomas. Finding myself working with bands on the jazz circuit more and more - it was Ronnie Scott himself who suggested to me, after a particularly rowdy late Friday audience - that the comedy and the music together was a good thing.

But music. Always the music. I’m looking forward to sharing some of the songs that have shaped my life. From the early pop structure American ‘standards’ of the twenties onward, to the odd Sondheim, some Joni and Bowie, Randy Newman, Nick Cave, as well as some new writing.

And some songs by me - covering the horrors of the health food shop, caravan holidays in Blackpool, my new push-bike and the contents of Jacob Rees-Mogg’s shopping basket.

Obviously.

My brilliant radio producer friend, Mike Vitti will be chatting to me onstage. There are few contemporary jazz, soul and pop artists he hasn’t interviewed.

I hope to see you there."
