The repertoire for piano quartet (violin, viola, cello and piano) may be comparatively small, but it includes some wonderful works by composers such as Mozart, Schumann, Brahms, Dvořák and Fauré. This concert features two of these works, complemented by Jean Françaix’s witty String Trio. All three pieces are full of warmth and joy, offering a welcome escape from the winter gloom.
About the Primrose Piano Quartet
Founded in 2004 and named after the great violist William Primrose, the Primrose Piano Quartet brings together Susanne Stanzeleit, Dorothea Vogel, Andrew Fuller and John Thwaites.
The quartet has an acclaimed discography featuring works by Fauré, Brahms, Elgar, Strauss and Schubert, alongside lesser-known British masterpieces from the 19th and 20th centuries. They have also commissioned major new works from composers including Sir Peter Maxwell Davies and Antony Payne, premiered at the Cheltenham Festival and London's Kings Place.
Their double CD of the complete Brahms piano quartets, performed on period pianos, was the culmination of years of research into historically informed performance practice and has been described by critics as ‘revelatory’. Their latest recording, featuring works by Fauré, Saint-Saëns and Chausson performed on a contemporary Érard piano, was released in 2024.
The quartet performs regularly throughout the UK and internationally, with tours to Denmark, Germany, Romania, Portugal and Bulgaria. They are also frequent performers at London's Kings Place, Wigmore Hall and Conway Hall, and host their own festival in West Meon, now in its 16th year, alongside residencies at Battle Festival and Torbay Musical Weekend.
