Scilla Alvarado is a self-taught, mixed-media mosaicist who has studied with many different mosaic artists. She has lived between London and a Luxor village in Egypt for over 28 years, leading a life immersing herself in different cultures and contexts.
She herself comes from a very mixed spiritual and cultural heritage. Having been a psychotherapist, shamanic practitioner and a teacher, she is inspired by people’s stories, particularly the marginalised and disenfranchised.
In this exhibition, she uses found objects, slate, rocks, glass and ceramics to process and express emotions triggered by circumstances and events, both internal and external to herself. Her mixed heritage resulted in her being a bridge at times through experiences of transgenerational trauma where difference had not been accepted, while at other times celebrating the richness of difference.
Her adventuring spirit led her in this exhibition to draw on many different traditional and cultural art forms and materials, which she found on her journeys from nature and everyday life. Sometimes, when she creates, she consciously sets out with the intention of telling a story. Other times, she is attracted to materials, colours, shapes and more, and a story emerges intuitively in the creating.
She has set up a mosaic project in Upper Clapton, London and in Luxor, Egypt where visitors can participate in workshops.
