Written at the ages of 30, 19 and 27 respectively, these trios capture the chamber music of three young, successful musicians at different points in their careers. Mozart couldn’t have known that he would only live for another 5 years, and this trio would be the third of only six piano trios in total that he would compose. Rachmaninoff was an eager 19-year-old graduate at the start of his professional career, performing his G minor Trio élégiaque at his official debut as a pianist in Moscow. Clara Schumann, aged 27, was a mother of four children whose husband was extremely ill at the time of the trio’s composition, but she maintained a busy career as a touring concert pianist despite these challenges.
Trio Taliesin take their name from Celtic mythology: Taliesin was a renowned bard who entertained at the courts of the Brythonic kings. The trio formed in 2017 and have given concerts in London, Oxford, Sedbergh and Llanidloes, collaborated on performances with actress Holly Walters, and performed Beethoven’s Triple Concerto with the Cobweb Orchestra.

Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart - Piano Trio in B flat major, K. 502
Mozart’s Piano trio in B flat major was composed in Vienna in 1786, the same year that The Marriage of Figaro was premiered. Mozart revelled in the new capabilities of the piano, which, due to technical advancements, was quickly coming into dominance as the most popular keyboard instrument.
Sergei Rachmaninoff - ‘Trio élégiaque’ No. 1 in G minor
Rachmaninoff had just graduated from the Moscow Conservatory when he wrote his G minor piano trio in 1892. He was already making a name for himself as a composer and pianist, held in high regard by his mentor, Tchaikovsky. The G minor trio is an early example of the melancholic lyricism that would come to encapsulate Rachmaninoff’s style.
Clara Schumann - Piano Trio in G minor, Op. 17
Clara Schumann’s Piano Trio in G minor was written in 1846, when she was living in Dresden. This was a difficult time in her life with both her husband and youngest son’s health deteriorating and she suffering a miscarriage that year. The piano trio is a deeply expressive, romantic work in which Clara gives full life to a wide range of emotions.
