The Blankfield Trio

The Blankfield Trio kicks off the new year with an early evening recital of chamber music for strings and piano by Beethoven, Schumann and Mendelssohn.

The programme spans the first half of the nineteenth century, a prolific period for composition as the strictures of classical style gave way to the fluid forms of romanticism.

Beethoven’s A minor sonata for violin and piano, composed as the new century opened, is a brooding and intense work, anticipating the mood of Schumann’s Fantasy Pieces for cello (originally clarinet) and piano, written nearly five decades later.

Mendelssohn’s piano trio in D minor is one of the most beloved works in the chamber music repertoire. Composed in 1839, Robert Schumann famously called it “the master trio of the age." Passionate, lyrical and dramatic, it is a virtuosic showcase for all three instruments.

The Blankfield Trio have been playing together, in various formations, for over 20 years. This is their first London appearance as a trio.
