roman kiln

Join us on Saturday 23 September for the Firing London’s Imagination project at Lauderdale House and help make tiles that’ll be used for the construction of a replica Roman kiln in summer 2024.

In 1962, a field survey found a scatter of Roman pottery fragments on a ridge at the northern end of Highgate Wood. The archaeologists Tony Brown and Harvey Sheldon excavated a trial trench in summer 1966 which contained Roman pottery including many wasters (discarded remains of ceramic objects damaged or deformed during firing), pieces of baked clay and kiln fire-bar fragments – all suggesting pottery manufacture.

Firing London’s Imagination is a three-year project, funded by the National Lottery Heritage Fund, to restore the 1st Century CE Romano-British kiln first discovered in 1968 to Highgate Wood in its own, dedicated visitor centre. The project also aims to engage local London communities in discovering and exploring the rich Roman heritage of the city.
