Subtle Vibrations

Textile artist Andrea Dawson explores vibrations and energies found in the natural world through weaving.

As a textile artist, Andrea Dawson explores vibration and the subtle energies of nature, drawing inspiration from the five elements—ether, air, fire, water, and earth. Her work investigates both visible and invisible vibrations found in the natural world, such as the shifting shadows at sunset and dusk, reflections and ripples across water, and the moving patterns of light cast through window panes, particularly leaded glass. Through weaving, Andrea attempts to translate these fleeting phenomena into material form. 

Using her loom, Andrea draws upon proportion, texture and colour to inspire her weaves and use unconventional construction methods and materials with differing properties. She prefers to work with recycled materials and often incorporates plastics, believing that if they will never biodegrade, they should be repurposed into useful and beautiful objects.

Andrea is a mature single mother with a long career in the textile industry and education. Wanting to deepen her knowledge and expand her practice, Andrea returned to university to study textiles, specialising in woven fabrics, and recently completed her three-year degree with a First. Through her work, she aim to pass on the knowledge and skills she has gained, as she believes traditional crafts such as weaving, making and mending are increasingly important in a time of environmental and social change.
