When most people hear the name of Jascha Heifetz, they think of him as one of the twentieth century’s most influential violinists. Few know him for the multitude of transcriptions he created for the violin and piano, and which he used as recital encores. Most of his transcription are based on popular tunes and were meant to display Heifetz’s virtuosic technique- both aspects of which readily entertained his eager audiences.

Heifetz composed his transcriptions so that the violin and piano would be equal performance partners – sharing both the melody and accompaniment. All of the Heifetz transcriptions show his unique sensibilities including his rich tone color, lyricism, and exploring the instrument to its fullest extent.

In 1927, after hearing Ponce’s “Estrellita” in a Mexican café, Heifetz began composing what became a master work of more than 150 transcriptions.

The Transcriptions which usually are played as encores are presented here as the central element of the concert programme. They will be linked by  interludes that will be improvised in real time. The purpose of the interludes is to make transitions between the different moods of each piece, which was a common performance practice in the 18th-19th Century.

This idea of the project was inspired by  our involvement and passion for the Improvisation Course lead by professor David Dolan, who is a world leading figure in Classical Improvisation. One of the main goals of this course is to deepen the connection between musicians and audience, and bring a sense of excitement through the unpredictable. We aim to enhance this by involving the audience in the creation of listening experience. The Transcriptions by Heifetz contain within them an overwhelming capacity to entertain and the spontanaeity and wit of the arrangements themselves make them the perfect vehicle for an improvisational performance.
