Join award-winning playwright, actress and broadcaster Non Vaughan-O’Hagan for a journey back in time in a fascinating talk about Dido Belle and her life in Kenwood.

Born to Maria, an enslaved woman, Dido Elizabeth Belle was raised by her paternal great uncle, Lord Chief Justice and later 1st Earl of Mansfield, William Murray. Murray was the owner of Kenwood, and Dido spent much of her life there. Raised alongside her white cousin Lady Elizabeth Murray, Dido enjoyed the upbringing befitting aristocratic Georgian women.

Born and raised in Aberystwyth, Wales, Non Vaughan-O’Hagan is an international award-winning playwright, actress and broadcaster. Her play, I, Dido recounts the story of Dido Elizabeth Belle, the daughter of a Navy Captain and an enslaved black woman and her upbringing in the home of one of Britain’s greatest judges, Lord Mansfield. I, Dido was commissioned by St Georges Bloomsbury in 2017 and explores the far reaching impact which family relationships can have on issues beyond the hearth and home. The play has been adapted into a short film which has enjoyed critical acclaim and nearly thirty awards at film festivals worldwide. It was recently shown as part of 'A Day with Dido' at Kenwood House.

Non’s credits as an actress include the Nurse in Romeo & Juliet and Lady Bracknell in The Importance of Being Earnest. Non is a well-known face on Welsh language television including BBC’s longest running series Pobol y Cwm. She was honoured to be asked by the BBC to be a commentator at Her Majesty’s funeral.
